Our Story

1986

Humble beginnings

Invented in the Waikato, Houston Technology began its journey in 1986, establishing itself as a trusted provider of business IT solutions. In the early years, our offerings centered around IT hardware and software, supported by labour services with a modest focus on home PC sales.

One of our standout products during this era was the premium grade Houston Computer, manufactured by Houston Computers in Singapore. This high-quality machine quickly became a benchmark for excellence, demonstrating our commitment to providing superior technology solutions.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic presented a new set of challenges and opportunities. Alan Chew and his team at Houston developed an innovative, user-friendly QR code system for contact tracing endorsed by the University of Waikato.

While the official Covid-19 app was eventually developed by RUSH Digital, the Ministry acknowledged Chew’s contributions to the concept of using QR codes for contact tracing, as well as being named as a Difference Maker of 2020 by Acuity Magazine.
